NHL: Detroit 3, Columbus 2 (SO)

DETROIT, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Valtteri Filppula netted the only goal in a shootout Saturday and Detroit notched its 16th straight home win with a 3-2 verdict over Columbus.

Filppula forehanded a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and past Curtis Sanford for the Red Wings, who kept alive a home winning streak that started Nov. 5.

Jimmy Howard iced the victory with a blocker save on Ryan Johansen, improving to a league-best 29-10-1 with 17 saves as the Red Wings extended the longest home winning streak since Philadelphia tied the NHL record of 20 straight during the 1975-76 season.

Detroit logged its third consecutive 3-2 shootout victory overall.

Ryan Russell and Nikita Nikitin scored for Columbus and Sanford finished with 29 saves in the setback.
