GLENDALE, Ariz., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Todd Bertuzzi scored the only goal of the shootout in the third round Thursday, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory over Phoenix.
The Red Wings won their fifth straight and jumped past Chicago into first place in the Central Division. Detroit has lost in overtime only once this season.
Jimmy Howard made 31 saves in regulation and the 5-minute extra period before stopping Shane Doan, Radim Vrbata and Gilbert Brule in the shootout.
After Brule's miss, Bertuzzi beat Mike Smith to end it. The Coyotes have lost two straight.
Bertuzzi scored in the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, but Brule tied it with 5:52 left in the middle stanza.
Ian White scored for Detroit while Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk assisted on both of the Red Wings' goals. Smith stopped 33 shots in taking the loss.
