KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Defending Champions Tour player-of-the-year Tom Lehman shot a 65 Friday that gave him a share of the lead at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship.
Lehman was tied with Bruce Vaughan, whose only win on the over-50 circuit came at the 2008 Senior British Open.
Friday's action at the Hualalai Golf Club opened the Champions Tour season with the first tournament of the year featuring an elite field of 41.
Lehman won three times last year, boosting his total of Champions Tour victories to five. He became the first to be named player of the year on the Nationwide Tour, the regular PGA Tour and the Champions Tour.
Vaughan appeared in only seven tournaments last season and finished in the top 25 just twice. He won the 2008 Senior British Open with a 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff, defeating John Cook.
Those tied for third at 6-under 66 were Brad Faxon, Loren Roberts, Corey Pavin and Jay Haas. Dan Forsman and Michael Allen both had a 67. Tom Watson was tied for 15th at 69.
