Interpol: No specific threats for Games

LONDON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The director of Interpol told security officials in London there is no specific intelligence on any potential threats against the 2012 Olympic Games.

Ron Noble said there have been no specific threats against the Games from terrorists or other criminal groups, but he called on Britain to increase its immigration staff and other European nations to increase passport checks in the run-up to the summer event, the BBC reported Thursday.

Noble made his comments as 44 London police officers from the marine, firearms and air support units conducted exercises on the River Thames with 94 Royal Marines.

Crime and Security Minister James Brokenshire said the "exercise forms part of the comprehensive testing and exercise program that is crucial in securing the Games."

"We are leaving nothing to chance to ensure we deliver a safe and secure Games," he said.
