DETROIT, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Detroit Tigers catcher/designated hitter Victor Martinez has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the team announced Tuesday.

The Tigers said Martinez sustained the injury last week while working on off-season conditioning.

Vail, Colo., specialist Dr. J. Richard Stedman will examine the knee, and if surgery is required, Martinez would likely miss the 2012 season, the Tigers said.

The 33-year-old Martinez batted .330 with 40 doubles, 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 145 games last season.
