GREEN BAY, Wis., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- More than 1,200 people showed up Friday to help shovel snow from Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers' home in northern Wisconsin.
Only 450 people got the chance, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. Team officials said about 800 were turned away because there was not enough equipment for everyone to work. Several inches of snow fell in the area overnight.
Those who responded to the call for shovelers appeared to have motives mixed between a desire to help their team and the $10 an hour promised for the job. Clearing the field and stands takes about 4 hours.
Shawn Connelly of Green Bay was dressed for the weather, with multiple layers of socks and sweatshirts.
"It's a great way to get some exercise and a few extra bucks," he told the newspaper. "I love getting inside Lambeau Field. … It's a little chaotic at times but you get in a groove after, what, three sections."
Hunter Hughes, a Shawano teenager, came with his father and said he got to see the inside of the stadium for the first time.
"It felt amazing," he said. "When I first saw the field, I thought it was going to be huge … I was like 'Well on TV it's really huge, but now it's little.'"
The Packers meet the New York Giants in a playoff game at Lambeau Sunday at 4:30 p.m. EST.
