HOBART, Australia, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Mona Barthel ousted No. 2-seeded Anna Medina Garrigues in Wednesday's second-round play of the Moorilla International tennis tournament in Australia.

Barthel won half the points when receiving serve in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Medina Garrigues. Medina Garrigues was good on 75 percent of her first serves but when she wasn't Barthel took advantage, winning 12 of the 15 second-serve points.

Defending champion Jarmila Gajdosova, seeded fifth, outfought Anastasia Rodionova in a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory. Gajdosova had nine aces but also seven double faults. She won 55 percent of the points in the first and third sets.

Also Wednesday, sixth-seeded Shahar Peer topped Sacha Jones 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in a match that had 13 breaks in 22 games. Peer won barely half the points on serve but still advanced.

Peer will go against Anna Chakvetadze in Thursday's quarterfinals, with a match between No. 1-seeded Yanina Wickmayer and Simona Halep also in that half of the draw.

Gajdosova meets Barthel and fourth-seeded Angelique Kerber plays Sorana Cirstea in the other quarterfinals.
