DENVER, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Denver quarterback Tim Tebow's spectacular game-winning touchdown toss against Pittsburgh Sunday touched off a record number of "sports tweets," Twitter said.

Tebow's 80-yard scoring strike to Demaryius Thomas in overtime -- which carried the Broncos to a 29-23 win over the Steelers in an AFC wild-card game -- was the subject of a 9,420 tweets per second, the social media Web site announced Monday on its own Twitter account.

ESPN said Tebow's heroics handily beat out the top three previous sports twittering events of all time.

The former champion was the U.S. women's soccer team's July 17 World Cup loss to Japan, which generated 7,196 tweets per second.

Next at 6,303 tweets per second was Barcelona's defeat of Manchester United in May's UEFA Champions League soccer game.

Following that is the 5,531 tweets per second generated by the Dallas Mavericks' May victory over Miami to win NBA championship.
