Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

TORONTO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Joffrey Lupul's tie-breaking tally late in the third period provided the difference Saturday in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 4-3 win over Detroit.
Lupul collected the puck behind the Detroit net after a face-off, wheeled and sent a back-hander past Jimmy Howard 7 minutes into the final period for the go-ahead goal.
The Maple Leafs improved to 3-0-0 on its four-game homestand with the help of Phil Kessel, who scored on a penalty shot, Dion Phaneuf's power-play goal and a score by David Steckel.
Jonas Gustavsson made 37 saves as the Maple Leafs bested the Red Wings for the fourth straight time in Toronto.
Todd Bertuzzi, Niklas Kronwall and Jiri Hudler scored for Detroit. Howard allowed four goals on only 18 Toronto shots.
