Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Thomas Greiss made his first start in more than a month Thursday and allowed only a first-period goal in boosting San Jose to a 2-1 win over Columbus.
Greiss, who last started Dec. 3, raised his record to 5-4 with a 24-save performance. The Sharks won their third in a row.
Vaclav Prospal beat Greiss with a wrist shot just 2:13 into the contest, but Ryane Clowe tied it on the power play with 6:57 to go in the opening period.
The game-winning goal came 4:44 into the second period from Joe Thornton.
Columbus remained stuck on 10 wins for the season, tied with Anaheim for the fewest in the NHL. Curtis Sanford allowed two goals on 39 shots.
