Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
BOSTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Paul Pierce scored 11 of his 24 points during a third-quarter charge Wednesday that sent Boston to an 89-70 win over New Jersey.
The Celtics have won four in a row since opening the season with three straight setbacks. New Jersey won its first game of the campaign and has lost its next six.
The Nets played without point guard Deron Williams, who has been suffering from soreness in his right side. Williams, who is averaging 17.3 points a game this season, was replaced in the starting lineup by rookie MarShon Brooks.
Boston was in front at 43-42 with 7:45 left to go in the third quarter, then ended the period on a 20-5 run. The Celtics led by as many as 24 during the fourth quarter.
Brandon Bass added 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Celtics. Kevin Garnett scored 14 points and claimed 12 boards.
Brooks had 17 to lead the Nets, who made 40 percent of their shots and were outrebounded by 10.
