Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Frans Nielsen scored the decisive goal in a shootout Tuesday, carrying the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory over Carolina.
New York's P.A. Parenteau went first in the tiebreaker and beat Cam Ward. Jussi Jokinen then matched him with a tally off Islanders' goalie Evgeni Nabokov.
Nielsen beat Ward in the second round and Nabokov went on to stop Eric Staal and Chad LaRose, staking the Islanders to their third straight win.
Nabokov finished with 37 saves while Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson and Nielsen scored in regulation for New York.
The Hurricanes got goals from Anthony Stewart, Brandon Sutter and LaRose but still fell into last place in the Eastern Conference.
Ward ended with 33 saves.
