VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Michael Handzus notched the only goal of a shootout Monday, handing the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 victory over Vancouver.

Roberto Luongo had made saves on Ryane Clowe and Joe Pavelski in the tiebreaker, but Handzus netted the game-winner when he deposited a forehand shot past the Canucks netminder in the third round.

Alexandre Burrows and Ryan Kesler missed the net in their shootout tries for Vancouver, and Antti Niemi -- who finished with 27 saves -- made a save on Cody Hodgson in the second round.

Benn Ferriero and Patrick Marleau scored in regulation for the Sharks.

Hodgson and Jannik Hansen scored and Luongo made 33 saves for Vancouver.
