EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The New Jersey Nets announced Thursday center Brook Lopez will undergo surgery Friday to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.

Club officials said Lopez could return in February.

Lopez had been mentioned as a key part in a potential trade the Nets had hoped to pull off for Orlando's Dwight Howard.

The New Jersey center suffered the injury during Wednesday's exhibition game against New York.

Lopez has not missed a game in his three-year career, during which he has averaged 17.4 points a game. He led the Nets in scoring last season with a 20-point average.
