DENVER, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Jay McClement gave Colorado the lead late in the second period Wednesday and the Avalanche held on to edge St. Louis 3-2.

The Avalanche let a two-goal lead slip away, but McClement produced the winning goal with 5:53 to play in the second.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere was perfect the rest of the way and finished with 37 saves.

Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod scored for Colorado in the opening period. David Backes and Chris Stewart rallied the Blues with goals during the first 10 minutes of the second.

Brian Elliott, who came into the game leading the league in both goals-against and save percentage, gave up all three scores on 22 shots.
