DALLAS, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A high school football coach was among two people injured Saturday by a runaway cart after his team won a state championship in Dallas.
Willie Amendola of Spring Dekaney High School in the Houston area was treated on the field after he and four other people were bowled over by an unmanned maintenance cart being used to collect yard markers after Dekany's 34-14 win in the Class 5A Division II championship game at Cowboys Stadium.
Amendola was talking to sportswriters on the field when the group was blindsided by the cart. "Luckily I hit the middle of the thing," Amendola, who was carried for about 20 yards on the front of the cart before he fell off, told The Dallas Morning News. "I got hit in the back, everybody was on the ground ... then I rolled off, just like James Bond."
The Houston Chronicle said Amendola walked off the field under his own power. Another victim had to be hauled off on a stretcher with an apparent leg injury.
A stadium official told the Morning News it appeared the throttle on the cart had not been switched off while the driver was picking up the pylons.
The San Antonio (Texas) Express-News said the bizarre post-game incident occurred after Dekaney running back Trey Williams capped a 3,890-yard rushing season -- the second-highest in the storied history of Texas prep football.
