Bonds gets 30 days of house arrest

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A federal judge in San Francisco Friday sentenced baseball's Barry Bonds to 30 days of house arrest and two years' probation for obstructing justice.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston told Bonds he also would serve 250 hours of community service and pay a $4,000 fine, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The home run king was convicted in April of giving misleading answers in grand jury testimony to questions about steroid use. The jury failed to reach a verdict on other charges, including perjury.

Prosecutors had sought a 15-month prison sentence. Bonds has 14 days to appeal his conviction.
