MONTREAL, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Flyers said Thursday team captain Chris Pronger will not play again this season or in the playoffs due to post-concussion syndrome.

Pronger was hit in the face by the stick of Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski Oct. 24 during Philadelphia's eighth game of the season. He has not played since.

During the Flyers' game in Montreal Thursday, General Manager Paul Holmgren announced the 37-year-old defenseman would be kept out of action the rest of the campaign.

"After consultation with two respected concussion specialists, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post-concussion syndrome," Holmgren said. "It is the recommendation of (the doctors) Chris not return to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs.

"Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better."

Pronger totaled one goal and 12 points in 13 games this season. He has played in 1,167 NHL games over 18 years with five teams and has competed in four Olympics for Team Canada.
