Dad: McCoy knocked unconscious in hit

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The father of Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy said Tuesday his son was knocked unconscious on a hit from suspended Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison.

Harrison collided with McCoy during last Thursday's game when the quarterback moved to his left and threw a pass. Harrison lowered his head and hit McCoy in the face mask. Game officials called a roughing the passer penalty on the play.

McCoy, who re-entered the game after the hit, has since been diagnosed with a concussion. It is unknown how much playing time he will miss.

NFL Executive Vice President Ray Anderson said Tuesday Harrison was given a suspension, without pay, because he is seen as a repeat offender. Harrison has been penalized five times for illegal hits on quarterbacks in the last three seasons.

The signal-caller's father, Brad McCoy, told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer his son was knocked cold by the hit and doesn't remember tossing a crucial interception after re-entering the game.

The elder McCoy, a longtime football coach, alleged his son wasn't given a sideline concussion test by Browns Coach Pat Shurmur despite complaining of nausea and not knowing who he was.

The Plain Dealer said the Browns hadn't responded to the claim.
