Report: Cardinals retain Furcal for $14M

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Shortstop Rafael Furcal has opted to return to the St. Louis Cardinals under a two-year contract, MLB.com reported Saturday.

The Web site said Furcal's deal is worth $14 million.

The 34-year-old came to the Cardinals from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade-deadline deal in July and batted .255 over 50 regular season games down the stretch.

Furcal struggled in the post-season even as the Cardinals went on to win the 2011 World Series.

The two-time all-star infielder hit .300 in 2010 while scoring 92 runs over 150 games the previous year despite a series of injuries.
