NHL: Philadelphia 4, Phoenix 2

GLENDALE, Ariz., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Matt Read ignited a first-period outburst with a power-play goal and added two assists Saturday in the Philadelphia Flyers' 4-2 victory over Phoenix.

Read's unassisted tally 4:23 into the game was the first of four goals in the opening period for the Flyers, who also got goals from Wayne Simmonds, Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell in the early scoring blitz.

Danny Briere contributed a pair of assists and Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside 36-of-38 shots against his former team, improving to 6-1-1 in his last eight starts.

Ray Whitney and Mikkel Boedker found the net for Phoenix.

Mike Smith started in net but was pulled in the first period after yielding all four goals on 17 shots. Jason LaBarbara entered and and stopped all 13 shots the rest of the way.
