BUFFALO, N.Y., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Jakub Kindl ignited a three-goal first period Friday and Jimmy Howard took a shutout into the third to bring Detroit its seventh straight win, 4-1 over Buffalo.

The defenseman scored his first goal of the season and only the third of his 73-game NHL career.

Johan Franzen scored on the power play with 6:12 left in the opening period and Valtteri Filppula tallied 63 seconds later to put the Red Wings in command and on their way to their 11th win in 13 games.

Howard made 27 saves and had his shutout bid spoiled by Jochen Hecht's wrist shot with 6:13 remaining. Pavel Datsyuk added an empty-net goal with 1:17 to go.

Jhonas Enroth gave up three goals on 35 shots.

Detroit's last loss came Nov. 17 against San Jose.
