NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera says he might need surgery on his vocal cords.
Rivera disclosed his medical situation at Tuesday at a Thanksgiving charity event where he spoke quietly, the New York Daily News reported.
"Every time I talk, it gets worse and worse," Rivera said.
"I thought it was a little simple thing and I went to the doctor and she said they might have to do something. I think they have to scrape them."
He said he doesn't know the cause of his condition. He will see the doctor again Monday when it could be determined whether an operation is necessary.
The nearly 42-year-old Yankees relief pitcher was the host for a Thanksgiving meal for 42 children and their families at his New Rochelle, N.Y., restaurant 42 Clubhouse Grill.
