Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise scored shootout goals Wednesday to bring the New Jersey Devils and Martin Brodeur a 2-1 decision over Columbus.
Brodeur made 35 saves during regulation and overtime, and then stopped the only two shots he saw in the shootout to win for the 630th time in his 19-year, record-setting career.
After Kovalchuk opened the shootout with a score, Brodeur stopped Rick Nash and Parise then faked out Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford and easily scored on a backhander.
That left it up to Mark Letestu to keep the shootout going, but he was unable to beat Brodeur.
Dainius Zubrus opened the scoring for New Jersey 4:09 into the second. Jared Boll tied it 6:01 deep into the third.
New Jersey has defeated Columbus in each of their last five meetings. Sanford made 23 saves for the Blue Jackets, who had won their previous two contests.
