ARLINGTON, Texas, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The Texas Rangers have signed free-agent reliever Joe Nathan to a multiyear contract, multiple sources reported Monday.
The deal for the 36-year-old former Minnesota Twins closer is for two years with a club option for a third season, Fox Sports reported.
The American League champion Rangers will pay Nathan a total of $14.5 million and will introduce their new pitcher at a Tuesday news conference, MLB.com said.
Nathan, who took over as Minnesota's all-time saves leader this year, became a free agent last month after the Twins declined an option on his contract.
He has racked up 261 career saves over 581 games, including 47 in 2009. After missing the 2010 season due to elbow ligament replacement surgery, Nathan appeared in 38 games this year, compiling 14 saves in 17 opportunities.
The signing appears to signal the Rangers are ready to move current closer Neftali Feliz to the starting rotation.
