NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays and Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks were named the top managers in each league Wednesday.
Maddon, who also won the award for the American League in 2008, was expected to have a weak 2011 season after losing a number of players in the offseason, especially after starting with six straight losses.
But Maddon and the Rays rallied from a nine-game deficit in early September, overtaking the Boston Red Sox in the American League wild card standings on the season's final day and ending the year at 91-71.
Maddon finished with 133 points on the Baseball Writer's Association tabulation, receiving 26 of 28 first-place votes.
Gibson joined Bob Melvin as the only Arizona managers to be honored with the award for the National League. He placed first on 28 of 32 ballots and second on the other four, scoring 152 points on the association's tabulation system.
The Diamondbacks came from two consecutive last-place finishes to win the National League West in 2011.
