Alabama, meanwhile, was ranked third for the second straight week, fending off a challenge from Oregon, which knocked Stanford from the ranks of the unbeaten Saturday with a 53-30 win.

The Cardinal's loss dropped them from fourth to ninth, while another previously unbeaten team, Boise State, plummeted from fifth to 10th following its loss to Texas Christian.

Placing fifth through eighth were Oklahoma, Arkansas, Clemson and Virginia Tech.

Cardinals tap Matheny as next manager

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Former catcher Mike Matheny has been named the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, succeeding the retired Tony La Russa, the team said Sunday.

The Cardinals said Matheny, 41, will be officially introduced Monday.

Matheny retired as a player in 2007 after catching for the Cardinals from 2000-04. He has served as a roving coach in the St. Louis organization since then but has no major-league experience as a full-time coach or manager.

La Russa walked away from the job after guiding the Cards to the 11th World Series victory in franchise history -- becoming the first manager in baseball history to quit after winning a world championship.

Also officially interviewed for the job were third-base coach Jose Oquendo, Class AAA Memphis manager Chris Maloney, Chicago White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing, former Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg and former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Chalmers wins Aussie Open, Woods rebounds

SYDNEY, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Greg Chalmers fired a 3-under 69 Sunday, posting a one-shot win in an Australian Open that featured a strong final round by former world No. 1 Tiger Woods.

Chalmers finished at 13-under 275, one better than third-round leader John Senden, to capture his second Aussie Open and first since 1998.

Woods, meanwhile, rebounded from six shots behind Senden after the third round to make it close, registering a 5-under 67 to claim sole possession of third place at minus-11.

He put a spectacular second shot just off the green en route to an eagle at the par-five 14th, pulling to just one behind Chalmers. But the latter's birdie at the par-three 15th kept him in the lead and he claimed the win when Senden missed a 35-foot birdie putt try in the final hole.

Tied for fourth at minus-9 were Adam Scott (68), Geoff Ogilvy (65), Jason Day (74), Nick O'Hern (72) and Nick Watney (72).

Kahne wins Phoenix; Edwards, Stewart close

AVONDALE, Ariz., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Kasey Kahne won the Sprint Cup series event at Phoenix International Raceway Sunday, ending a two-year winless drought.

Meanwhile, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart stayed tightly bunched in the points battle for the Sprint Cup Series championship.

Red Bull Racing's Kahne grabbed the lead with 13 laps left, collecting his 12th career victory -- but first since September 2009 -- after edging Edwards by 0.8 seconds.

Edwards' second-place finish and Stewart's third-place showing allowed Edwards to maintain a three-point lead heading into next weekend's season finale at Miami.

Jeff Burton came in fourth and Ryan Newman rounded out the Top 5.
