ST. LOUIS, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Albert Pujols' visit with the newly re-christened Miami Marlins is the first salvo in what baseball observers see as a likely long and crowded bidding process.
Pujols toured the Marlins' new stadium, which the team would like to see filled on a regular basis on those sultry South Florida summer days with the help of such a superstar.
But the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said the Marlins are one of at least six teams expected to contend for the high-priced free agent's services when negotiations begin in earnest after the winter meetings.
The newspaper said the Cardinals will also be in contention. While the team is making plans to boost its payroll, it might not be enough to out-bid other potential suitors including the Marlins, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels and the rival Chicago Cubs.
The Post-Dispatch saw the Cubs and Marlins as having the most flexibility financially, while the Cardinals, Angels, Dodgers and Rangers appear to be more constrained.
