SYDNEY, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods, seeking his first victory in two years, grabbed the lead Friday in the second round of the Australian Open.
Woods shot a 5-under 67 over the Lakes Course for a two-day total of 9-under 135. He has not won since capturing one of the playoff tournaments at the end of the 2009 season.
Knee and ankle problems limited Woods to nine appearances on the PGA Tour this year and he failed to finish three of those tournaments. He has fallen to 58th in the world rankings.
Peter O'Malley shot a 66 and was alone in second at 136. Jason Day, runner-up this year at the Masters, was at 137.
Woods is tuning up for next week's President's Cup matches in Melbourne. Hunter Mahan, another member of the American team for those matches, withdrew Friday with neck problems and is questionable for next week's competition.
Woods had seven birdies and two bogeys. He opened the day with a birdie and had back-to-back birdies at Nos. 13 and 14. He added birdies at 16 and 18 for an opening nine score of 5-under 32.
He had a bogey at the third hole -- his first in 29 holes of the tournament -- but answered with a birdie at No. 4. He also bogeyed 6 and got back to 5-under for the day with a birdie at the eighth hole.
