NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Dan Girardi touched off a four-goal outburst in the third period Friday that broke open a close game and gave the New York Rangers a 5-1 win over Carolina.
It was a 1-1 contest when Girardi scored on the power play with 9:13 to go in regulation. Brandon Dubinsky scored 9 seconds later, his first goal of the season after piling up 24 last year.
Ryan Callahan and Brad Richards added fourth-period scores to send the Rangers to their sixth straight victory. It is their longest winning streak since capturing seven in a row 25 months ago.
Carolina, which has lost four straight, got its only goal from Alexei Ponikarovsky to tie it late in the second period.
Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves to get the win. Cam Ward stopped 35 shots, but allowed four goals on 17 shots in the last period.
