MONTREAL, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 28-of-29 shots and the Edmonton Oilers posted their seventh win in eight games Tuesday with a 3-1 decision over Montreal.

Khabibulin lowered his goals against average to 0.98 -- the lowest after nine games for any goalie since the NHL expanded in 1967-68 -- and made 11 saves in the final period to pace the Oilers.

Ryan Jones scored a shorthanded goal in the first period and Tom Gilbert gave Edmonton a 2-0 lead with a tally late in the third period.

Max Pacioretty pulled the Canadiens to within a goal with marker 22 seconds later, but Ryan Smyth iced it for the Northwest Division-leading Oilers with an empty-netter.

Carey Price stopped 11-of-13 shots for the Habs.
