SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants Monday acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Kansas City Royals for pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and a prospect.

The Giants also sent minor league pitcher Ryan Verdugo to the Royals for Cabrera, who set career highs with a .305 batting average, 18 home runs, 44 doubles and 87 RBI in 155 games last season.

Cabrera has compiled a career .275 average with 58 homers, 161 doubles and 357 RBI for the Yankees, Braves and Royals.

Sanchez, meanwhile, posted a 4-7 record with a 4.26 earned run average in 19 starts this past season for the Giants.

The 28-year-old fell off considerably from 2010, when he went 13-9 with a 3.07 ERA in 34 games, helping San Francisco win the World Series.
