SHANGHAI, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Martin Kaymer had birdies on nine of his last 12 holes Sunday in storming from behind to win the WGC-HSBC Champions golf tournament in Shanghai.

Kaymer opened the final round five strokes off the lead but tied the Sheshan International Golf Club course record in winning his first tournament title since January in Abu Dhabi. It was his 10th win of his career.

He fired a 9-under-par 63 in tying the course record set three times in 2009. Kaymer's 72-hole total of 20-under 268 matched the tournament record set by David Howell in 2005.

"The way I played golf today was outstanding. The way I putted on the back nine was brilliant," Kaymer said. "I was fortunate. A lot of holes I had good numbers, so I played aggressive, which was nice."

Kaymer opened the final round with six pars. He had birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, holing out from a greenside bunk for the first birdie, and made the turn at 2-under. Kaymer took off with four consecutive birdies -- for the second straight day -- over 10-13.

He had a par 14 but had another birdie at 15. After a par at 16, he closed with back-to-back birdies with his 20-footer at 18 sealing the win.

Third-round leader Fredrik Jacobson had four birdies and three bogeys in a 1-under 71 and finished second at 17-under for the tournament. Graeme McDowell (67 Sunday) was third at 16-under 272.

Paul Casey (67), Rory McIlroy (69) and Charl Schwartzel (65) tied for fourth at 15-under.
