BASEL, Switzerland, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Novak Djokovic returned to form Thursday, losing just three games in a second-round match at the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.
Djokovic had been sidelined since winning the U.S. Open, except for a brief Davis Cup showing in which he retired with a back injury after 1 1/2 sets. His first tournament appearance was Tuesday and Djokovic battled to a three-set victory.
But Thursday Djokovic blew past Lukasz Kubot 6-1, 6-2 in 55 minutes. Djokovic, who is 4-0 lifetime and hasn't lost a set versus Kubot, had four breaks in seven receiving games and lost only 10 points in eight service games.
Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Radek Stepanek. Roddick lost his serve three times in the first set but Stepanek didn't manage a break opportunity after that.
Local favorite -- other than Roger Federer -- Stanislas Wawrinka also came from behind in taking a quarterfinals berth. He beat Robin Haase 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Wawrinka lost just 10 points on serve after the first set.
Other second-round results saw Kei Nishikori beat Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Mikhail Kukushkin top James Blake 6-3, 6-4; and Florian Mayer rout Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 6-1.
Djokovic will go against Marco Baghdatis in the quarterfinals with a match between Nishikori and Kukushkin also in that half of the draw. Roddick draws the third-seeded Federer and Wawrinka meets Mayer in the other quarterfinals.
