Federer, seeded third in the tournament he's won four of the last five years, defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Federer lost his serve twice in the second set but only faced one break point total in the first and third sets.
He cashed in five of his seven break-point chances and capped the match by losing just eight points in five service games of the third set.
