ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Rays announced Monday they have exercised 2012 club options on right-handed pitchers James Shields and Kyle Farnsworth.
Shields, 29, was one of the Rays' most dependable starters in the recently completed season, compiling a 16-12 record with a 2.82 ERA in 33 starts.
The six-year veteran hurler earned a trip to the All-Star Game while setting team records with 11 complete games and four shutouts.
Farnsworth, meanwhile, notched a career-high 25 saves while logging a 2.18 ERA in 63 relief appearances in 2011.
The 35-year-old has also played for the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers.
Catcher Kelly Shoppach, however, had his 2012 club option declined by the Rays.
The seven-year veteran batted .176 with 11 home runs in 87 games for the Rays last season.
