CHICAGO, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster will stay with the club next season after exercising his $14 million player option, the team said Saturday.

Dempster compiled a 10-14 record with a 4.80 earned run average this past season -- his highest ERA as a starter since 2003.

But he also led the Chicago in starts (34) and innings pitched (202 1/3) last season while battling through a rough start and finish to the 2011 season.

The 34-year-old went went 0-6 over his final eight starts.

Dempster has a career record of 112-116 over 519 games, including 294 starts in stints with the Cubs, Florida and Cincinnati.
