Dipoto takes over for the departed Tony Reagins under a 5-year contract that has him overseeing all baseball operations.

"We felt it was important to find an individual who can evaluate talent, manage our entire baseball operations system," Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a written statement.

Moreno said Dipoto possessed the communication skills and analytical thinking he was looking for as the Angels look for a way to get past the rival Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Dipoto, 43, spent eight years as a pitcher for the Indians, Rockies and Mets in the 1990s and worked in the front offices of the Red Sox and Rockies before joining the Diamondbacks in 2006 as vice president of player personnel.

Dipoto was the Diamobdbacks' interim general manager in 2010 and interviewed for the position, which went to Kevin Towers. He remained with the organization this season as vice president of scouting and player development.
