ST. LOUIS, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball postponed Game 6 of the World Series due to the threat of bad weather Wednesday, giving Texas and St. Louis a second straight day of rest.

The Rangers, owning a 3-2 advantage and seeking the first World Series title in franchise history, will take on the Cardinals in St. Louis Thursday beginning at 8:05 p.m. EDT.

If a seventh and deciding game is needed, it will be hosted by the Cardinals Friday. Both Thursday and Friday nights were forecast to be dry with light winds, but the temperature could dip below 40 degree on both evenings.

This is only the second World Series in the last eight years to be extended to six games. The championship of baseball has not gone seven games since 2002, when the Los Angeles Angels defeated San Francisco.

The postponement did nothing to change the scheduled starting pitchers for Game 6. Jaime Garcia will start for the Cardinals and Colby Lewis will pitch for the Rangers.

When those two pitchers met in Game 2, St. Louis took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning before the Rangers struck for two runs to win the contest and avoid falling into a two-game hole.

Texas Manager Ron Washington said the extra day of rest would not change his plans for his starting pitcher in a potential Game 7.

Matt Harrison has been listed as the starter for such a game, but the rainout gives Derek Holland a chance to get four full days of rest before a seventh game.

Holland shut out St. Louis on two hits through 8 1/3 innings in Game 4 of what turned out to be a 4-0 Texas victory.

"Nothing has changed from what I said earlier," Washington said. "I'm going to leave it at that. Harrison has been a big part of this team all year. We are not going to change the things we have done to get us this far. That is why it is Harrison."

Washington said, however, Holland will be available out of the bullpen for both Game 6 and, if needed in Game 7.

The extra day of rest should also be beneficial for Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, who has a groin injury.

"Anytime you are dealing with nagging injuries, a day off is a break," Washington said.

St. Louis Manager Tony La Russa would not commit to a seventh game starter.

"We have to get through Game 6 first," he said.
