COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- R.J. Umberger and Ryan Johansen each bagged a goal and an assist Tuesday and the Columbus Blue Jackets bested Detroit 4-1 for their first win of the year.
Umberger's goal just 21 seconds into the game set the tone and Johansen's power-play tally 8 1/2 minutes later put the Blue Jackets ahead to stay at 2-1.
John Moore added a goal and Derek MacKenzie notched an empty-netter for Columbus, which came into the game with an 0-7-1 record -- the worst start in team history.
Steve Mason turned aside 30-of-31 shots, including all 15 he saw in the second period, earning the victory.
Darren Helm scored and Ty Conklin made 28 saves for the Red Wings, who lost for only the second time in seven games to start the season.
