VIENNA, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Tommy Haas used a third-set tiebreaker win for a first-round upset of fifth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela at the Erste Bank Open tennis tournament in Vienna.

Haas used a solid serving game for the 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Chela. Haas fired 10 aces and won 70 percent of the points on serve while having to deal with just two break points in the 2 1/2-hour match.

Chela only lost his serve three times -- twice in the second set -- but couldn't manage more than one break against Haas.

No. 8-seeded Fabio Fognini advanced when Tommy Robredo retired in the third set after Fognini inched ahead 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 2-1.

Aljaz Bedene also moved into the second round without finishing his match. Bedene won the first set 7-6 (7-4) but Ivo Karlovic was unable to come out for the second.

Daniel Brands and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez both got out of the first round with three-set victories. Brands topped Martin Fischer 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) behind a 14-ace attack and Garcia-Lopez got past James Blake 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the first time the two had played since 2005.

Also Tuesday, Xavier Malisse drubbed Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-4; Dominic Thiem beat Thomas Muster 6-2, 6-3; and Philipp Petzschner ran past Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-2.
