Torre: MLB to probe clubhouse drinking

ARLINGTON, Texas, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball operations chief Joe Torre said Sunday he will look into admissions Boston Red Sox players drank in the clubhouse during games.

Torre, speaking to reporters in Arlington, Texas, before Sunday's Game 4 of the World Series, said the admissions of game-time beer drinking by Red Sox pitchers Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz had him "concerned," The Boston Globe reported.

"It's something we're concerned about, just to make sure that we get all the facts and that's my area," Torre said. "I know I have plans just to talk to some people.

"It's something we're going to look at and find the best way to approach it, let's put it that way," Torre added.

He told the Globe baseball officials may consider a clubhouse alcohol ban throughout the game.

The Red Sox are one of a dozen major league teams that allow alcohol in the clubhouse.

Two Montana players stunned, arrested

MISSOULA, Mont., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Two University of Montana football players were shot with stun guns and arrested early Sunday after allegedly scuffling with police, authorities said.

The players -- all-America cornerback Trumaine Johnson and backup quarterback Gerald Kemp -- were arrested on charges of disturbing the peace and obstructing police, The Missoulian newspaper reported.

Missoula police Sgt. Collin Rose said the players, both 21, were shot with stun guns to help officers subdue them during a struggle.

The incident happened after the Montana squad had returned from a Saturday win at Northern Arizona University.

"We are continuing our investigation into the allegations, and will let the judicial system run its course," Montana Athletics Director Jim O'Day said in a statement. "Any disciplining will be handled internally through our student-athlete code of conduct."

The newspaper said the incident happened about 2:40 a.m. at an off-campus party attended by about 30 people.

Garcia breezes in record Euro Tour win

VALENCIA, Spain, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Sergio Garcia's 8-under-par 63 Sunday in the final round of the Castello Masters gave him a resounding win with the lowest 72-hole score in European Tour history.

Garcia finished at 27-under 257, breaking the previous record of 258 set by David Llewellyn at the 1988 ARF Biarritz Open and equaled in 1990 by Ian Woosnam at the Torras Monte Carlo Open.

The Spaniard's performance -- his first victory in nearly three years -- also tied the mark for the second-lowest score to par in tour history.

He finished 11 shots ahead of Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who had flirted with a 59 but ended up settling for a 7-under 64.

Knotted for third place were Alexander Noren (64) and Richie Ramsay (65) at 15-under 269, while Thomas Aiken (63) was fifth at 14-under 270.

American Ted Ligety wins giant slalom

SOELDEN, Austria, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The United States continued its fast start to the Alpine World Cup season Sunday with Ted Ligety's victory in the men's giant slalom at Soelden, Austria.

Ligety, the defending champion in the event, turned in a combined-run time of 2 minutes, 22.00 seconds, and second-place Alexis Pinturault of France came in at 2:22.29.

"I was skiing fast in training, but that really doesn't count for anything until you actually do it in a race," Ligety said. "So to finally (prove) how fast you are skiing is an added bonus that goes along with winning the first race of the year."

The victory followed American Lindsey Vonn's first place in Saturday's women's giant slalom at the same venue.

Philipp Schoerghofer of Austria placed third and American Bode Miller placed ninth with a 2:23.32. Carlo Janka of Switzerland was in second place behind Ligety after the first run, but Janka slipped to fourth with a disappointing second run.
