EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Matt Cullen scored the only goal of the shootout in the opening round Thursday, boosting the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 victory over Edmonton.

The Wild snapped a two-game skid and won on the road for the first time in three tries this season, getting a chance at overtime when Dany Heatley scored with 2 seconds left in regulation.

Niklas Backstrom allowed a first-period goal and then stopped everything else, including the shootout attempts by Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Eric Belanger. Backstrom finished with 30 saves.

Ryan Jones tipped a shot past Backstrom with 3:54 to go in the first period and that looked as if it would be the game's only goal until Heatley spoiled the night for Edmonton goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.

Khabibulin also made 30 saves while suffering his first loss of the season in three appearances.
