SACRAMENTO, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The financially struggling United Football League is ending its regular season early, canceling the final two games, a report said Monday.

But The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee reported the UFL will still have a championship game and a consolation match.

The Virginia Destroyers and the Las Vegas Locos, both with 3-1 records in the shortened season, will play the championship game Friday in Virginia. The Sacramento Mountain Lions and the Omaha Nighthawks, both 1-3, will play the consolation game Friday in Omaha.

"Naturally, we are disappointed to not play a full season and would have like to have matched our success and progress with more wins on the field," Mountain Lions owner Paul Pelosi said in a press release.

Pelosi said the team led the league in attendance and "enjoyed great fan support for the Mountain Lions in our market."

The Mountain Lions, led by head coach Dennis Green, have drawn big crowds to Hornet Stadium on the Sacramento State campus, including a sell-out crowd of 19,938 for the home opener Sept. 17.

Fans who bought tickets to canceled games will be offered full refunds, the league said.
