

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Anabel Medina Garrigues posted a shutout victory Monday in first-round play of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.
The unseeded Medina Garrigues swept by local wild-card entrant Anne Kremer 6-0, 6-0 in 46 minutes. She lost 14 points -- seven each serving and receiving -- over the 12-game match.
Medina Garrigues was particularly dominant off Kremer's second serve, winning 11 of the 13 points in that situation.
No. 7-seeded Maria Kirilenko advanced to the second round when Carla Suarez Navarro retired in the third set. Kirilenko was up 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 3-0 when the match was stopped.
Iveta Benesova will face Kirilenko in the second round. Benesova was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner over Pauline Parmentier. Benesova won 73 percent of the points on serve.
Tamira Paszek defeated Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2 in Monday's other match. Paszek had five breaks in eight receiving games.
World No. 3-ranked Victoria Azarenka is the top seed for the Luxembourg Open, which is worth $37,000 to the winner of Sunday's title match.
