Webb Simpson goes after PGA money title

SEA ISLAND, Ga., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Webb Simpson, who added this event to his schedule in a bid to claim the tour's money title, shared the lead Thursday after one round of the McGladrey Classic.

Simpson, one of six players to have won twice on the tour this year, shot a 7-under 63 over the Seaside Course to tie Zack Miller for the top spot.

Luke Donald, who hopes to become the first player to win the money title on both the European and American circuits in the same year, has won $5,837,214 on the PGA Tour in 2011. Simpson is second, trailing Donald by $68,971.

A finish of 14th or better this week would vault Simpson ahead of Donald on the money list with one tournament remaining. Donald is not playing this week and has said he might play next week at Walt Disney World if Simpson moves past him.

Miller has only one Top 10 finish on the tour, a share of ninth this season at Pebble Beach. The 63 he shot Thursday is his lowest round on the circuit.

Tied for third at 64 were Billy Horschel, Martin Piller and Scott McCarron. Former major champions Angel Cabrera and Louis Oosthuizen were among those at 65.

Bud Cauley, hoping to become only the sixth player to earn a PGA Tour card without going through the qualifying tournaments, was tied for 42nd with a 68.

Cauley, who turned pro in June, has won $671,000 by taking advantage of sponsor's exemptions this year and he can earn his way onto the tour by finishing among the 125 leading money winners. The 125th spot is currently held down by Matt Jones, who has won $602,392.

Cauley will likely be in the top 125 even if he does not win any money this week, but he will make things certain by simply making the cut Friday. By jumping from college directly to the tour, he would join a short list that includes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
