CONCORD, N.C., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Tony Stewart, who won the first two races in the Sprint Cup chase for the championship, captured the pole Thursday for Saturday's Bank of America 500.
Stewart turned in a lap around the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway in 191.959 mph. It was his 13th career pole and his first in 15 months.
Stewart's lap was just .006 of a second quicker than that of Matt Kenseth. Carl Edwards, who currently leads the points race that will determine this year's Sprint Cup champion, qualified third.
A.J. Allmendinger and Gregg Biffle, neither of whom is among the 12 drivers battling for the title, were fourth and fifth in qualifying.
Edwards will take a one-point lead over Kevin Harvick into the fifth of the 10 races that make up the chase. Five-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson is third, four points behind. Stewart is seventh in the chase.
Harvick qualified 14th and Johnson will start out ninth in the race.
