Tomic advances on Shanghai upset win

SHANGHAI, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Bernard Tomic ousted fifth-seeded Mardy Fish in second-round play at the Shanghai Master tennis tournament in China.

Tomic rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, beating Fish for the first time in three career meetings.

Tomic dropped just six points in five service games in the third set in sealing the win. Fish wasn't able to force a break point on Tomic in the set.

The Fish loss was the only upset among six seeded players in the second round Tuesday. All except 13th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka won in straight sets. Wawrinka topped Donald Young 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

No. 7-seeded Nicolas Almagro defeated Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-3 by winning nearly three-quarters of the points on serve while eighth-seeded Gilles Simon rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Albert Montanes in 51 minutes.

Andy Roddick, the No. 10 seed, claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 decision over Grigor Dimitrov in a match that took more than 2 hours and 15th-seeded Florian Mayer ousted David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-4.

Feliciano Lopez and Ryan Harrison posted upsets as the first round was completed Tuesday. Lopez knocked off ninth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) and Harrison ousted No. 11 Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-3.

Alexandr Dolgopolov, the 12th seed, beat Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) and 14th-seeded Jurgen Melzer got past Ivan Ljubicic in first-round matches.

Other players advancing to the second round with wins Tuesday were Alex Bogomolov Jr., Radek Stepanek, Milos Raonic, Albert Ramos, Kei Nishikori and Dmitry Tursunov.
