NHL: San Jose 6, Phoenix 3

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Joe Pavelski and Andrew Desjardins netted two goals apiece Saturday and the San Jose Sharks cruised to a 6-3 win over Phoenix in their season opener.

The Sharks scored four times in the second period to turn the game into a rout.

Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe also scored for San Jose.

Backup goalie Thomas Greiss, making the start while Antti Niemi recuperates from minor surgery, logged 26 stops for the victory.

Phoenix got a pair of goals from Shane Doan and Mike Smith turned aside 44 shots for the Coyotes.
