ARLINGTON, Texas, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Alexi Ogando led a potent Texas bullpen with two scoreless innings Saturday and the Rangers downed Detroit 3-2 in rain-delayed AL Championship Series opener.
Ogando (1-0) shut the Tigers out over the sixth and seventh innings following the second of two lengthy rain delays totaling 1 hour, 45 minutes -- boosting the Rangers to a victory in the first contest of a best-of seven series to determine the American League champion.
Darren Oliver and Mike Adams teamed for a scoreless eighth and Neftali Feliz struck out the side in the ninth, after Ramon Santiago had led off with a bungt single, to earn the save.
David Murphy hit an RBI triple and scored on Ian Kinsler's single in the second and Nelson Cruz added a solo homer to provide the offense for Texas.
Detroit ace Justin Verlander (0-1) surrendered three runs on five hits, walking two and fanning five to absorb the loss.
Austin Jackson provided an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch for Detroit, which will try to even the series in Sunday's Game 2.
